I’m concerned how to train my ears. It’s a matter of training my brain as it turned out. This is how it went:
Session: Tutorial
Date: 09/10/2008
Tutor: Duncan Speakman
The main activites were: Discussing how to train my ears, expalining my other ideas
I learned: if I want to use sensors I should do a test as early as possible, there will be an IMM seminar on sensors. I should draw a map of sounds and compare that with reality. If I can’t hear my footsteps I’m in a noisy environment.
I am still left wondering: I forgot to ask about animation sound design.
I shall follow up by: Asking Dominic on listening excersices. (Hearing two oppinions give me a broader context to research into.)
And so the next day…
Session: Tutorial
Date: 10/10/2008
Tutor: Dominic Grant
The main activites were: Discuccing the tricks to create sound for animation, discussing how to train my ears
I learned: There isn’t a real trick to creating sound, but there are many options for it (sonifying movements). I should talk to the animators about the animation. What’s the cartoon’s world like? Is it in synch? Only events make sounds or does sound tell a story behind the action? Taking full creative control could be dangerous. 2D animation with 3D sound can be distracting. Assigning sound features to a charachter is the key (See Belleville Rendez-Vous -> the old lady has a sonic charachter).
I am still left wondering: N/A
I shall follow up by: Reading the R. Murray Schafer book, exploring the works by: Norman McLaren, Jan Svankmajer, Pixar Animations, the works of Chris Watson.
