describing music

Recently I have been confronted with description of feelings. Particularily in the context of describing the mood of music. It was just a few minutes ago when I browsed the BBC website and found a review by Michael Quinn.

Now I’ve been thinking about ways of describing music and feelings and I just realised what a great excercise this is! At the Encounters film fest during the School of Sound lecture I noted that the best way a sound designer and a composer can communicate is through adjectives. (Obviously avoiding the blatant ones such as “happy” “sad” and such likes. They are not descriptive enough.)

So here is the excercise part for myself: reading reviews and creating a style of my own which I can use to describe music. Sounds easy but it’s pretty damn hard to do well.  Here is a task for me, which I already enjoy! Let’s see what critiques write and how they write it first!
